Handmade things worth bringing home — cachaça, indigenous art, ceramics, linens. Not a souvenir list.
Paratii Cachaça and Engenho d'Ouro — two of the remaining artisanal distilleries. Tours run from the town center; most include a tasting of white, aged, and herbal varieties. Look for the umburana-aged bottles for something unusual.
Aldeia Maracanã (on the Caminho do Ouro) — work by Guaraní and Tupinambá artists, direct from the community. Seed-bead necklaces, ceramics, bows, and small sculptures.
Casa Coruja — the kind of small boutique with one of everything: local designer linens, handmade ceramics, embroidered towels (ours are made by a sister workshop).
Ateliê Trilha — hand-block-printed textiles and bags by local artists.
The Saturday Market — sets up at the edge of the historic center. Produce, spices, fresh fish, and the occasional antique.
Note: shops here mostly close during the lunch hour (noon to 2pm) and reopen until evening. Weekend hours are longer.
